Airports in Europe

Hello,
Hope you've had a nice weekend and are ready for the week ahead. Here are the answers for the video extract about Airports in Europe.

P.S.
I tried to upload the programme we watched on Thursday about Hong Kong Airport but I couldn't. I guess the file is too big and takes ages to upload. Anyway, we are going to watch parts of the programme again tomorrow and look at the questions together. The film introduces the new topic - Ground Transportation. It also raises the very important issue of Accessibility of airports. But about this tomorrow.

Here are the answers as promised:

1. More than a billion passengers passed through the top 10 European airports in 2006.
2. The increase is 5 %.
3. The solution for the increased growth in passenger numbers is to increase efficiency.
4. The forecast for 2025 is 20 million flights per year and the challenge for airports would be how to accommodate all these flights.
5. In the future the biggest challenge for airports will be how to avoid congestion in airports.
6. Munich airport is the primary hub for Lufthansa, which has 120 aircraft at the airport. It is the 7th busiest airport in Europe and the fastest growing. In 2006, 31 million passengers passed through the airport – an increase of 7.5% from the previous year. The airport has personnel of 28,000 employees. A 3rd runway and a 3rd terminal were recently added.
7. Terminal 2 baggage handling system is 40 km long, it can handle 15,000 suitcases an hour. It is fully automated, a computer calculates the shortest route for each piece of baggage.
8. Successful interaction depends on coordination between airlines, crews, safety and security personnel, handling agents, engineers and caterers.
9. Wake turbulence is described as the 2 vortices from the tips of the wings during take off and landing.
10. The challenges faced by airports in the future will be how to accommodate such a huge aircraft. The aircraft’s huge dimensions will require a change in the airport design, support vehicles, 2 –deck configuration of the air bridges and bigger space for parking, to name just a few.

Regards,
RV
