The Building of Hong Kong Airport

Hello,

We finish this week with an excellent documentary - a part of an American programme called 'Extreme Engineering' about the building and relocation of the new Hong Kong Airport (HKG), a project that is similar to the building of the new airport in Doha (NDIA) in some ways.

1. After watching the film, do you see any similarities between the two projects? Any differences?

Now try to answer the questions below:

2. What were some of the problems that the old Kai Tak airport experienced?

3. What is unusual about the location of the new airport? Describe its terminal building.

4. What means of transportation were considered in terms of accessibility of the airport? What are some examples of the extraordinary engineering work done related to the surface transportation?

5. How long did the process of construction of the airport take? What are some of the amazing achievements made in its construction and planning?

6. List some of the problems experienced the first months of its operation.

7. What is its reputation today?
I hope you enjoyed the programme and the task.
Have a nice weekend and check the blog for the task on the latest podcast about Bombardier. Later this weekend I am going to post the answers to the listening exercise on Airports in Europe.
Regards,
RV

    differences:
    old airport:
    outdated, crammed and dangerous.
while new airport is modern, massife and safer.

    similarites:
    both are busy.

    2)

kai tak airport experienced some problems:

    - problems relating to passenger flights: many accidents occured because the airport is tiny, danger, outdated and cramed in the heard of the Hong Kong.

    - problems related to cargo: the airport have only one way and for a city that have the biggest internationl airport their causes a major problem to global trade.

    3)

The new airport is bult at sea. Which an unusual location for an airport. They create a new island in the south of china sea. On that island a massive new air facility able to handle the worlds largets jets and the single largets passenger terminal on world.

    4)

    - The longest doble decker suspension bridges in the world.

    - massive new longer water tunnels.

    - 22 miles of new super highway.

    - high speed rail system.

    5)

The project was planned to take more than 10 years but they had to finish it with 7 years only before handling hong kong back to china.

some of the amazing achivements in construction:

    - moving 200 million tonnes of rock.

    - cleaning the floor sea.

    - turning two islands into a single larger one.

    - The double decker bridges.

    6)

    - The flight information system gave out creating have in the passenger terminal and thousands of passengers delayed.

    - the communication link with the old airport goes down.

    - someone accidentally deleted a critical data base.

    - chinese plane crushed because of the typhon.
