A Reply To a Letter of Complaint - Situation 3

Hello,

This is my last post to the blog for this course. I will leave the blog open during the summer for students to share their travelling experiences.

If you feel you are missing the blog and your classmates, keep writing on the blog. It will be nice if we keep in touch during the summer break.

Here is the last writing task.

You received a letter of complaint. Write a reply to the letter in which you provide an explanation of the security procedure.

This is the letter of complaint that you received.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to complain about the treatment I received at the hands of your airport security staff. First of all, when I was departing from the airport, the security attendant at the medal detector was very rude, and did not allow me to take my sunscreen lotion in my carry-on luggage. There was no explanation; she just took it from me.

Then, when I arrived back from my trip, I was thoroughly searched by customs, and it was an extremely embarrassing experience. They provided no explanation for why I was being searched. In fact, they were even more unfriendly than your security personnel. I was very insulted by the treatment I received in your airport, and I would like an explanation.

Sincerely,
Mr. Peter Codfrey

Some expressions you may decide to use:

provide an explanation
security staff/personnel
do a search at random
have the authority to perform/do a search
restrictions on liquids, gels, aerosols
not exceed 100 ml.

Looking forward to reading your final posts.

Regards,
RV

If it is grater than 100ml it will be confiscated by security. Moreover, regarding the thoroughly searched that you received by customs they have authority to search everyone without exception and sometimes do a search at random. In order to ensure the safety for the passengers, airport and aircraft.

    Dear Mr. Godfrey,

I am writing with reference to your letter of complaints 28-3-2009.I apologize for the way you were treated by the security staff .I would like to provide an explanation of the procedure.

Regarding the sunscreen lotion, our airport has special restrictions in liquids, gels and aerosols. Any liquid, gel, aerosol more than 100ml is confiscated by the security personal in the metal detector checkpoint. You can put it in your checked luggage, but not in your carry-on baggage. This is done to avoid any organic explosive to board to any airplane.

Regarding the body search, every passenger must be checked thoroughly. Especially when the alarm of the metal detector goes off, to locate the cause of the alarm by using the handheld detector or by the full body scanners, to provide a safety flight for our passengers and to protect the country from any explosion.

I hope you understand our procedures and accept our apologies. I am going to take further steps with the security personnel about the rude manners with the passengers to avoid this from happening next time.

    Sincerely,
    Aisha

    Fatima Abdullah
    Security attendant

    Dear Mr. codfrey,

I am writing with respect to your letter of complaint dated July 13, 2010.

First, I apologize on behalf of the security staff and customs because the security attendant behaved rudely with you while you were walking through the metal detector and customs were unfriendly while they were searching you. Also, I agree that the security attendant should explain to you the reason of confiscating the sunscreen lotion. However, he take the lotion because it is rejected according to security measures. In addition, customs have to explain for you their rules, so you will cooperate with them.

Nowadays, the airport become an attractive target for many terrorists because there are a large concentration of people their. Also, they might use different tactics to explode the aircraft. For example, a large amount of any kind of lotion could be used as a bomb to bring down the flight because it contains chemical substances. As a result, security measures become tighten. Therefore, your sunscreen lotion goes under restrictions on liquids which states that liquids of more than 100ml have to be confiscated. Moreover, customs play a role in controling the movement of goods in and out the country to protect the people and the society. Thus, dangerous goods such as drugs and bombs will be prevented from entring the country.

Finally, I hope you more convenient security procedure either in our airport or other’s airport for your coming flights. Also, we would like to apologize again about the impolite security attendant and the unfriendly customs.

    Sincerely,
    Fatima
