Airport Design

Hello,

This is the penultimate (before the last) writing topic before the mid-term exam and it is about airport layout.

1. Before you write, research which are the 5-star airports in the world for 2010, rated by SKYTRAX
http://www.airlinequality.com/AirportRanking/5-Star.htm

and try to find out whether they are examples of centralized or decentralized airport. What are the ground transportation links provided at each one of the three 5-star airports?
2. Discuss the two modes of operation in terms of convenience for passengers and it terms of airport management.
Post your comments.
Regards,
RV

  1. ++++Airport Layout++++

Airport can be placed in two very different layouts: Centralized and decentralized airports. Firstly, we come to the centralized airport which is one terminal only and all the processing happens in one main terminal. It’s very old airport and was the most common model. For example, in Florida, in Belgium, and Doha international airport. The advantages of those models of airports that it can be more efficient and of curse cost effective. But also it has disadvantages which are unable to deal with the substantial growth in passengers’ number. And the walking distances is very small so the airport becomes congested.
Secondly, on the other hand the decentralized airport which is more than one terminal and each terminal has complete set of processing facilities such as JF Kindy, Kansas City, and Toronto. The advantages of those model is that the number of passengers never become comfortably high and it can process a large number of passengers and the walking distances are kept low. Also there is a disadvantage which is that the investment is so high complete sets of facilities and personnel.
Finally, there is many airports started as centralized but changed to decentralized such as London Heathrow and Madrid airports.

  2. Airport design or layout. There is two model of airport first one is that centralized and second one is decentralized. Centralized model of airport is that with one terminal and all of processing happens in one main terminal or carried out there. For example, in 1960 most of airports were centralized and the name of airport has one terminal is Florida and Bolgium. The advantages of centralized airport is more efficient and more cost effective to operate. The disadvantages of centralized airport is unable to deal with the substantial growth in processing number so the airport have to build the gates further and further so the waking distances is un comfortable for passengers. Also airport will be congested.

Decentralized model of airport is that has more than one terminal and each one has a complete set of processing facilities. For example, JFK, Kanasas,Toronto and LHR airport. The advantages of decentralized airport is that the number of passengers never become un comfortably high-on ahuman scale, waking distances are kept low and can process a large number of passengers. The disadvantages of decentralized airport is that the investement is very high because the airport must spend a large amount of money to has complete sets of facilities and to give salary to perssonel and spend a large
amount of money to ensure the security for passengers.

  3. Airport Layout..

There are two main operational designs centralized and decentralized and each one has different processing facilities.
The centralized design has one terminal and all the processing is carried out there.Doha Airport is one example of that. The advantages of this design is that, this design is more cost effictive because they don't have to spend as much money on infrastructure in the decentralized design. Also there are some disadvantages of this design. One disadvantage of centralized design is unable to deal with the substantial growth in passengers numbers.Another disadvantage is that, people have to walk long distances from the gates to the terminal.

The decentralized design has more than one terminal and each one has a complete set of processing facilities.Kansas and Tronto are some example of this design.First advantage to note is that, the number of passengers will never becomes uncomfortable high and the walking distance will kept low. Also it can process a large number of passengers. The disadvantage of this design is that the investment is very high to provide complete set of facility and personnel.

  4. Hi every body :)
    Airport layout ,

Airports could be build in two different operational.
It can built with centralized facilities and with decentralized facilities.

In past , passengers who used to travel through the largest airport in the world notice that all airports were so small that the centralized model was the common model of operation . In centralized model, all facilities and processing happens in one terminal .

As the number of passengers increased, airports had to built more facilities and more gates that very far from check- in and concourse and security systems, so passengers had to walk long distance.

To fix this problem they built more than one terminal, each one with his own facilities and processing and that called decentralized model or design.

Also the decentralized model kept on a human scale in number of passengers in one terminal become uncomfortably and they kept the walking distance very low .

    AND THANK YOU

  5. There are two common modes of operation of airports in the world, each design has some advantages and challenges in terms of passenger numbers, walking distances and staff requirements.

The fist layout is called centralized where all the processing happens in one main terminal. We can find this layout in older airports and it was common in 1960’s. Doha airport and Florida airport are example of centralized model. This model has some positive points like it’s efficient and cost effective. But it has also some negative points, like it’s unable to deal with the substantial growth in passengers number, walking distances and it can often be congested. In fact there are airports started as centralized but changed to centralize. Like, London airport.

The second layout is called decentralized with more than one terminal and each one has a complete set of processing facilities. We can find this layout in Kansas City and Toronto. It has some positive points like, the number of passengers never becomes uncomfortably high and it also can process a large number of passengers. It actually has some negative points like, investment is very high and that is because it needs a complete set of facilities and personnel.

All in all, airpotrs designs differ from centralzied to decentralized, and each country will chose the suitable style according to there economy and the number of passengers they deal with.

  6. Airport Design
There are two different types of airport layouts which are centralized and decentralized models of operation. In 1960s there were not a lot of passengers, so the centralized design was the common design. By 1980s the number of travelers had increased sharply; thus, some airports began to use the decentralized layout. There are many differences between centralized and decentralized design. First, centralized layout has only one terminal and the processing of passengers and freight happens in one point like Tampa international Airport in Florida. On the other hand, decentralized model such as: John F Kennedy Airport in New York has more than one terminal with a complete set for processing. Moreover, decentralized layout is better to avoid people congestion. But, centralized model is preferred by some airports because it does not cost a lot of money. Next, passengers have to walk long distances from parking facilities to processing areas. For example, people have to walk 1.5 km from arrival gates to parking areas in the Chicago O’Hare Airport. As a result, decentralized airports were built to reduce the distances of walking to 300 m. Overall, decentralized design is preferred to process people and freight quickly. In addition, centralized layout is better because the initial investment of processing facilities is not too high.
